I caught myself just now about to title this blog post "Home." I realized, though, that Jesse is soon to be my home...my family :) So thus in this post we are talking about our new "HOUSE" :)

Jesse and I are so blessed in that we are able to start our married life together in our own house! Though it's not yet finalized, it's a lovely little place in Boone....

Houses aren't complete without visitors! We look forward to having many fun times with you once we're moved in!

Growing Where Planted

Do you ever find yourself thriving in certain places or seasons of life or absolutely dying in others? I've noticed that location and environment definitely affects my spiritual outlook. Sometimes are harder than others to seek and pursue growth! Knowing this about myself, I've been struggling to invest time in some spiritual disciplines. If nothing else, seeing "The Book of Eli" shot me to the heart of my LACK in memorized scripture. I've been attempting to memorize Colossians, primarily because it talks about who we are IN CHRIST. This passage about the character of the new man has come up often... (Col. 3:12-17)

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on TENDER MERCIES, KINDNESS, HUMILITY, MEEKNESS, LONGSUFFERING;

13 BEARING with one another, and FORGIVING one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

14 But above all these things put on LOVE, which is the bond of perfection.

15 And let the PEACE of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be THANKFUL.

16 Let the word of Christ DWELL in you richly in all WISDOM, TEACHING and ADMONISHING one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, SINGING with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

My dear sister and matron of honor, Amy, threw me an incredible bridal shower. With chocolate cream cheese cupcakes, delicious fruit, chicken crescents, and other lovely delicacies, we did not want for goodies! A get-to-know you game, prizes, and presents! She really should be an event-planner, I'm convinced. Not to mention the wonderful company of dear friends :)

Ridiculous blog titles

I'm no longer in the city (bittersweet) to see it's sparkling lights. Thus, while in this period of transition, so shall it be oddly named. :)

I worked on flowers for a while the last few weeks. They're not impossible, but definitely harder than I imagined. this should be interesting. :)

I discovered a ton of amazing bushes in our yeard that I'm totally stealing greenery from :) Shh....don't tell anyone. No pics of the corsages because I forgot to take some. They are very simple and delicate, but I think quite pretty :)

Okay so changing my blog background to a baseball theme really isn't a big deal, but sometimes it's the little things that count. Doing the unexpected "just because" you want to tell your significant other that you care about what they care about. You love them for the things they love. And even if you're not a hard core St. Louis Cardinals fan, you can still appreciate the joy they bring to another.

Let's make a cake!

So, I'm a do-it-myself kind of person. I like to learn new skills and try new things. With a wedding coming up in 83 days, money-saving is a GREAT incentive to try learning something new...like wedding cake baking!!!! I've never done it in my life so this was interesting. Let's start small... an 8" round and a 6" round. Phew.

Adding the second layer to my tiny cake. I'm pretty sure the fondant is supposed to go on all at once at the end...but I didn't do it that way. Some things you've got to learn the hard way.

MY CAKE! My mom and I sat looking at this white blob, wondering how to decorate it. All of the sudden, she springs to the pantry and comes back with a bag of red hots and some fake flowers. Mom, you saved the day!

A Very Special Tuesday...

Several days before, I asked Jesse if we could go see the movie "The Christmas Carol." He thought through our schedules and suggested we go on Tuesday. Seemed like a normal plan. As the days got closer, he began to reveal a few extra details...having breakfast together the morning of...dinner before the movie...a short stop at the Garfield-Park Conservatory (a place we visited once before but wanted more time in). All these things seemed sweet and fun, but a little over the top when all I wanted to do was see a movie. But I went along with it :-)

We met outside my apartment building at 6:00am on Tuesday. It was freezing, but twilight was beautiful. We wandered through the city--he was smiling quietly as I started rambling about all the different breakfast places I thought he might be taking me. We finally ended up at the beach--one of my most favorite places in the world. We stood looking at the water and the birds as the light started to get a little brighter. I'm not sure if he strategically placed a driftwood log there or what, but there just providentially happened to be a nice log there for us to sit on and dig our toes in the sand. (Again...it was freezing.) Laughing, talking, praying, and taking pictures...the sun finally rose and thus began the most beautiful day.

Starving and cold, we quickly put our shoes on and began the walk to the breakfast location. After exhausting every possible guess for a cafe, I finally guessed "the SDR?" (Student Dining Room) and Jesse excitedly said "YES!" At this point I'm thinking, "Are you serious? You've been talking it up so much and now you're taking me to the free dining room?" But I smiled :-D When we arrived, he told me to get a drink and sit down. As I sat with my coffee, Jesse walks out of the servery with three covered plates (much like you see at fancy restaurants). My thought: "Hmmmm...." He sets the most delicious looking and tasting omelet in front of me. Several days before, he arranged with one of his coworkers to have a very special breakfast made for us. IT WAS FABULOUS.

Well...the day had pieces of normal-ness to it...we went to classes and to chapel. We were supposed to meet back together around 4:00pm to start our evening. As I was getting ready to go, I casually asked my lovely roommate, Michelle, "Hey, how do I look? Should I change my outfit?" She took that as her cue to throw open the closets and have me try on every article of clothing I own. I ended walking out the door with the same outfit I originally had on, but most appreciative of how sweet she was :-) Jesse and I hurried to the train, trying to get to the conservatory before it closed at 5:00. As soon as we arrived at 4:45, Jesse started nervously fumbling with his phone. I disregarded it and just kept walking.

We headed towards the Fern Room, but delayed as Jesse pointed out a dead tree to me along the way (He was stalling). The Fern Room is a beautiful large greenhouse style room, filled with ferns, trees, rocks, a pond in the middle and a beautiful waterfall in the back. We took the walkway through the mini-jungle, stopping for a moment to laugh at Jesse when he ran into a rock. As we rounded the corner near the waterfall, I started to see red rose pedals on the path. Jesse didn't say anything so I pretended to be oblivious. When we reached the pedals, he pulled me onto the cove below the waterfall and said he wanted to read me something. He pulled out his Bible and read Proverbs 31:10-31 to me. He paused for a moment afterward. "Emily, I want to spend the rest of my life with you." ...LONG PAUSE...Me: "Was that a question?" Jesse: "No." ...LONG PAUSE...Jesse: "I love you." (First time he's said that to me.) At this point, he puts our coats (which I had been holding) on the ground, pulls a little red box from his pocket, kneels down on one knee and says, "Will you marry me?" And I said yes.

Two of our good friends, Jameson and Allison, had been Jesse's assistants, putting the pedals down and taking a few pictures. They popped out from behind the bushes and gave hugs :-) After the excitement, Jes took me to Maggiano's Italian restaurant for a LOVELY dinner and we celebrated. After the meal, it was definitely desert time...we got some icecream to take back to my apartment, where we were supposedly going to celebrate with my roommates, but little did I know there was a party going on! We walked into the room to a huge "SURPRISE!" of friends and cake :-) What a fabulous time.

So...that's the long story...we're getting married!!!

36 Days

December 12th is my finish line :) I've got four big papers due before then. Here are the topics...if you have any opinions, suggestions, or research sources please feel free to leave a comment.

YIKES! I'm hopeful that it will all get done and I'd love it if they wouldn't require any all-nighters. :)

Tonight is the North-South Football Game. It's Moody's all-star football game of their intramural sports teams. Jesse and several of our good friends made the team so I'll be dressing up in black and red (team colors) and cheering for them in the freezing cold tonight :) Oh the prices paid for fun in Chicago....

These last few weeks have been stretching and good. My CNA class has finished (except for one more clinical day happening on the 15th). It was such a great experience, though a lot of work. I LOVED the people in my class. All of them so unique and genuine. I feel like I made some good friends.

My new little computer, fondly named "The Comical Companion," died on me two days ago. He lived a short life and died digesting my final papers. I'm a little ticked at him, but hope for his best in computer-heaven. Maybe they'll give him a new hard-drive.

Now...time to get to work on one of those papers :)

Movie from Missions Conference

MBI hosted their annual missions conference this last week. One of the keynote speakers was from India...his work was in freeing the Dalits (lowest social class in India) from the stigma of their situation. On Thursday night, they showed this film, a secular project, to the attendees and had a discussion afterwards. I didn't get to hear the discussion, but would highly recommend that you take time to watch this documentary. It's a small look into the red light district in Calcutta and what one woman was trying to do. It's 90 minutes long and, I would suggest, is not appropriate for children. Last weekend, Jesse and I took a trip to the wonderful land of sunny California :) We arrived Friday afternoon, rented a cute little red car that I neglected to take a picture of, and drove to my grandparents house :) After a delightful lunch with them, we drove to the little historical city of Benicia, which once served as the state's capital for nearly 13 months.

We drove to the outskirts of the city where there was a beautiful view of the Bay. Here's a few pictures of the bay-bridge.

After that adventure, we went to the ever-famous hot dog restaurant...Caspers :) YUM. When ordering "everything" on a casper's dog, you get mustard, fresh tomatoes, and onions.

Saturday was our visiting day. After breakfast at my grandpa's favorite diner, Jesse and I drove to my hometown of Scotts Valley where we visited the wonderful little farmer's market! Joe Carlson, the most gifted coffee shop manager/barista I've ever met, made us some delicious iced coffee. :) After some shopping around and visiting with friends, we headed to the Carlson's house for lunch! Seeing old friends and meeting new ones was a blast :)

After lunch, we got to sneak a quick trip over to Felton to see more family...literally give hugs and visit for 5 minutes, then Jesse and I had to book it to the rehearsal dinner...YIKES! Time got a little bit away from us, but we still managed to arrive on time!

We kind of forgot to take pictures in between...like at the rehearsal dinner and at my aunt and uncle's house (I know...don't throw stones at me) :( but WE HAD A SUPERB TIME at both. It was so wonderful to be with family and see faces we hadn't been around for so long.

Then came... SUNDAY!!!!

Jesse and I were up early, on our way into Berkeley, when we missed our exit and ended up on the Bay Bridge :) So we drove into San Francisco and back out real quick, but got a few pictures along the way :)

We finally got to Berkeley and had a little time to spare. Since we hadn't eaten, we drove around town trying to find a place for breakfast. Me in heels and Jesse in a tie, we tried to avoid going to McDonalds and found a cute little French Bistro instead! Oh boy was it delish... :) AND...after brunch....we ordered flourless chocolate cake. Amen and Amen.

We finished our brunch and made our way to the church...

I camped out at the piano to rehearse the music with my little sister (Elaine) and her boyfriend (Josh). We hadn't practiced the music together before that morning. :) Jesse was kind enough to be the photographer.

The wedding was structured as a contemporary Catholic mass with a few additional characteristics added for the vows and special offerings. It was a lovely service...very unique to Chelsea and Marcus.

After the ceremony, the auditorium emptied and Marcus' sister led the procession of people to the reception hall with a belly-dance. (Sample clip to be posted at a later time) :)

Good Intentions

I have had the best of intentions to post often on my blog...I've taken pictures, videos, written funny quotes, and a host of other thoughts to share. Alas, I trip and fall on the way to the computer every day (not literally), preventing you from reading the expanse of my thoughts (however short that may be) :)

All that to say, today is marked for me by the simplicity of hope. Recently, I've looked to joy through music. The two songs that I keep returning to are worth the few minutes it takes to listen to them on youtube or imeem or better yet just by clicking the link. :) Please take a couple minutes.

That's such a fabulous word. It expresses so much in just two syllables. :)

I have returned to Chicago. My final return as a STUDENT, granted that I finish the semester okay :) I am glad to be here. It is so different! I've moved into an apartment with two of my girl friends, right at the edge of campus. It's so pleasant to be sitting, typing this on my coffee table...with a couch behind me...a tv against the wall...a sandwich that I made in my kitchen....AH! Brilliant. It feels very fun, though a tad bit kiddish. Well guess what!? I can still be kiddish! No rulebook has it written that a 20 year old can't be a little immature every now and then ;)

One thing I love about being a student is that every semester is a new experience...a chance to BEGIN AGAIN at something. For me, a person that likes to set a goal and accomplish it, this is a great thing. I wonder how "real life" is? I fear beginning life after college and getting myself into a "stable" job or situation where there are no fresh beginnings....only big long-term goals...like retirement. I don't like the thought of retirement yet. Check back with me in 2 years and see if I say the same thing then... ;)

The idea of "ministry" continues to excite me. Though I definitely believe that the life of a Christ-follower IS ministry in whatever capacity, I am so thrilled at the prospects of full-time ministry in a setting completely dedicated to the discipleship of believers and love of the lost. What a cool thought.

In the love of the RANDOM...
At church today, pastor was giving us an example of PERSPECTIVE. He asked us to put punctuation in the following sentence:

"woman without her man is a savage"

I have a very strange habit...

A friend reminded me the other day of just how odd I really am. When I meet people, I subconsciously assign that person a color, animal, and fruit quality. When I think of them, they remind me of those three things.

For instance...my older sister, Amy...
Color: Red
Animal: Bunny Rabbit
Fruit: Apple

Or there's my dad, Bill...
Color: Grey
Animal: Raccoon
Fruit: Grapefruit

Clarification, when I see you, I will not automatically think to myself, "hm...this person is blue peachy mammoth," but if I'm ever asked what color a person reminds me of, I can usually answer in a few seconds.

Weird, huh? Yeah...I think so too. :P Hope that makes you laugh :)

Thoughts on books...

I like books :) when they're interesting. Surprisingly, I had a fairly good deal of time to read this summer! What fun! Here are the books I read and what I think of them...

What a wonderful surprise of a book. I picked up a hardback version of it for a dollar at a thrift store because I liked the feel of the pages. I don't recommend that method for picking out books, but in this case, it definitely worked! The story is simple yet incredibly intriguing. It's an easy read meant for people like me with a very short attention span. :) However, for people that are introspective and reflective, this also provides some excellent brain work. Wouldn't recommend it for kids or unromantic men.
A friend of mine found this little jewel at a thrift store several years ago. I didn't pick it up until this summer, and what a folly that was on my part! This was one of the best books in my library! However, I only recommend it to people that enjoy Jane Austin movies (not necessarily her writing style though). It is an easy read, full of 18th century humor and romance. You will, inevitably, begin speaking and writing using words like, "thither, hence, splendid, and dastardly" after reading this.

Wow. I was not expecting what I read in this book. It is a true story, which makes me immediately think it will either be less interesting than a fiction or it will rather neat and inspiring. Well "neat and inspiring" hardly do it credit. This story is a revolution of thinking for 2 individuals and how their lives impact each other. It is also an incredible account of God's sovereignty. I confess, I found myself sobbing in the final chapters. It touched a nerve in me that was so real and frightening at the same time. I won't explain further for fear of giving away the plot, but highly recommend this book.

Oh, how I wish I had my 11th grade English teacher explaining this one to me as I read it. Chaim Potok is a renowned author of Jewish literature. This particular book is a fiction piece about a young boy with a talent for art. His passion and addiction, if you will, for art draws him from his family and ultimately from his faith. It is a frightening book of what a "good habit" can do if gone unchecked. The elements of Jewish literature were particularly intriguing.

I am not the biggest Donald Miller fan. I read Blue Like Jazz and now this one, but though both provided some comical, real-life scenarios, I did not close the book feeling enlightened or challenged. This work is his recollection of a "find himself" road-trip he took with a good friend in his early 20s. No incredible spiritual insights or stunning moments of brilliance, but fine for the 25 Filipino pesos I paid for it. A "read-if-you-have-nothing-else-to-read" book.

Before commenting on this one, I must confess, that the remaining books have not been motivated by my own pleasure of reading or the expanse of my intellect. They are rather required for school and I am just getting ahead. The one time in my life I'm not procrastinating ;) That said, The Universe Next Door did surprise me at how logically Sire organized his thoughts. For people like myself who are ignorant in the realm of philosophy and apologetics, this is simple, well-organized, and easy to understand. I was impressed with his ability to keep such complex ideas and areas of thought to such susinct chapters. Very helpful :)

John Piper is a Moody Bible Institute favorite, but not necessarily mine. I have enjoyed a few of his works. This was not my favorite, but did provide some excellent biblical insites. I appreciated his efforts to provide a very biblical basis for missions. "Missions exists because worship does not." He seems very passionate about the need for a scriptural understanding of the position of man in relation to God and why we must be impacting the world with the gospel. A bit of a slow read...seemed a little redundant, but overall profitable.

I finished this one thinking..."hm...interesting." It is certainly a short, very clear-pointed book. Mr. Harris does not beat around the bush to communicate his opinions, but neither does he seem to cloak them with the usual courtesy most authors allow for. I found myself greatly pitying this man for his incesent need to prove or rather disprove all of Christianity's reasoning. "Many doctors are moved simply to alleviate human suffering, without any thought of God. While there is no doubt that Christian missionaries are also moved by a desire to alleviate suffering, they come to the task encumbered by a dangerous and divisive mythology. Missionaries in the developing world waste a lot of time and moeny proselytizing to the needy..." This book may irritate some, make others question their faith, or like me...pity people like Mr. Harris who can't accept anything on the basis of "faith." I do recommend it for those that are prepared for a bit of a shock.

You still have time to read before the summer's gone! Go to the library! Ready...set...GO! :)

Moving to memory...

You know how for a while after an experience, you'll use phrases like..."Well while I was in __________..." That's how it's been for the last couple weeks. I think it will be that way for a while. Please forgive me if I overuse my Philippines stories...I am trying to let things process and make a difference in my life. I hope some of the stories are encouraging to you also...

This was one of the hardest scenes for me to understand. This was the son of one of our staff members. He would spend hours at a time alone in the courtyard, rarely wearing clothes and hardly ever with supervision. The difference between our ever-constant child care in the states and the independence in the Philippines startled me. It's hard for me not to call it "neglect." Emily Bill and I had a saying for these kind of moments..."It's not wrong, it's just different." That was a hard one to swallow when it came to seeing these kids.

This girl was one of my best friends. In this picture, she had just gotten a letter and gift (the necklace) from her sponsor. she is sponsored by a girl her age in Germany. It was the most enrapturing thing to look at this girl's face when she opened that letter and read it out loud to us all. This changed my entire perspective of agencies like World Vision and Compassion Child. A child sponsorship program is so drastically different when you are with the kids. They love their sponsors...people they have never met...with such gratitude.

Emily Bill and I enjoyed being tourists when we went out of the village. Usually once a week, we tried to leave the village and go to a mall or a "normal" place where we could feel a little more at home. Starbucks, believe it or not, is very popular in the Philippines. They had at least 4 in one mall! We went there several times. This particular picture was right after Em and I went souvenir shopping (note the button on Em's shirt). She was a rich friend to have. After our many conversations, I remember always feeling so grateful that I had a sister to process situations with and get feedback. Thing I most appreciated about her: the way she prayed.

This video is of 3 of my favorite kids acting silly :) The funny thing is, though they were acting for the camera, this is almost how they were all the time. :) Adorable :)

It's wonderful to be home. A feeling of security, familiarity, and committed fellowship. Thank you, Lord.

My debriefing time in Michigan was excellent. I was continually reminded of the difficulty in making "My" experience, somebody elses experience. I long to involve others in the time they invested in, but to think creatively enough to do that well...that's the tough part. Yet I'm enjoying the process, seeing how God wants to incorporate what I learned and saw during that time, into my "normal" routine.

I met my niece the other day. In Philippines, I lived above a maternity ward. I found myself curious about the many women that would wander into the clinic for delivery. I wondered their stories and life. It made me so sad to learn about a baby dying in the clinic or being abandoned. This happened more than anyone would like to see. Each day, I thought of my little niece...why did God chose to give her to us in this American context where hospitals and medicine are so available. It baffles me how God puts people into their families and communities, knowing exactly how he will use them there. I am so grateful for this little child.

Actually...just our 4th story room. Today there's a signal 2 typhoon coming! The whole area has canceled school and no one's working! It's the calm before the storm though, because it's a gorgeous day outside! A small cloud cover, a little sunshine, a cool breeze, the coldest it's been yet (like 80 something degrees). Em an I got to our daycare, had our devotion time with the staff, and they told us to go home! :( We're going to have to be creative with what we do with our day now :)

Update: my foot's all healed from that nail. Thank you for the prayers :)

Our classes have been going well. We've had at least one or two sessions for our 2 proverbs and our spanish class. Our first James class will be on Thursday. "Schedule" here in the Philippines is something like water...it flows wherever whenever. We kind of just aim for a day and find a time when everyone's free. A little frustrating, but we were well warned :) Our Spanish class has been a big hit! All our kids (and adults!) were really interested in learning the language. The Philippines was controlled by Spain for a time so many of the words are the same in Spanish and Tagalog or just a little off. For example, Filipinos tell time, days, months, and numbers in Spanish. We're trying to think creatively on how with can incorporate biblical principles and Scripture into our coursework for them. You can pray for some good ideas and if you have any, PLEASE comment or email them to me!

Food is great here. LOTS of rice all the time. Even though we're not big fish eaters, Em and I have gotten pretty good at munching down these little salty fried fish that we're served a lot. They're not bad when you get past them looking at you. :) Our staff ladies are EXTREMELY good at making dishes very tasty with not much at all. We're trying to learn all the names of veggies and leaves...it's hard to remember! There are about 6 kinds of bananas!

Pray for energy and creativity. Also continue to pray that we pick up a little more language bits. :)

Oh Dear Friends…

What an incredible day this was. EmEm and I were up and moving around 5am and at the day care by 7. Em led devotions for the staff members, teaching out of Psalm 46 (God is our refuge and strength). We spent the rest of the morning helping the three ladies cook for the children.

**Side note: As a means of precaution, I won’t be using the real names of the believers in this community. Any names you read in my updates are aliases.**
After learning how to make the food, wash the dishes (in a very particular way, I might add) and helping to serve the children, Em and I got to walk around the community a little bit. Kuya (Older brother) Craig introduced us to a few children and their families. One of the MBBs in the community is having his house rebuilt, so his previous home needed to be torn down. We were blessed to assist with the demolition. I decided I would do well on a demolition crew…it’s kind of fun ripping things apart. Our productivity ended short though when I so graciously stepped on a nail, poking through my shoe and into my foot. :P Leave it to me to end the fun! We went back to the day care, got cleaned up, and enjoyed a delicious lunch with the staff members.

Around 3, the staff met together to begin our study through Proverbs. Despite the language barriers and the lack of understanding we have of this culture, Em and I were able to read through and talk about the high points of the 1st 6 chapters. God was faithful! Our method has been to ask questions about the text. “What does wisdom mean? What does God say about temptation, parenting, etc? What does it mean to fear God?” We got some INCREDIBLE and unexpected responses from this group. It’s neat to see how much they know and what things we are teaching them for the first time. Pray that God gives us wisdom as we teach. It’s hard to relate to a different culture when you don’t know what’s normal for people (I.E. what are their cliché phrases or inside jokes or methods of parenting or understanding of…???) We are doing a lot of LISTENING and LEARNING and PRAYING. Continue to pray that God gives US wisdom while we teach about it. Also, we just found out today that we’ll be teaching another weekly class on Thursdays about the book of James. WE NEED GOD’S UNDERSTANDING AND STRENGTH! (A little creativity might be helpful too!)

Unspiritually, one thing I love about the Philippines so far is that they eat about 6 times a day. Breakfast, mirienda (snack), lunch, mirienda, dinner, (and for night-owls) mirienda!!! Meals are smaller, but for rice lovers and people that just like to munch, this is the place for you! For our afternoon mirienda, Kuya Adam bought us “banana-que” and “some-other-fruit-name-I-forgot-que.” They’re fresh fruits, dipped in sugar and fried. DELICIOUS.

Em and I are learning to love roaches and heat. God is faithful to help us through even the small things that are difficult. These are SMALL prices to pay for the service of other believers and the glory of God.

Hi friends!

I'm sorry there's been such a delay. We've been without internet for several days and just today found a good spot. Hopefully I'll be able to post more regularly. Unfortunately today, I can't seem to figure out how to work my little thumb drive (with all my detailed update on it) with this computer. I'll try again in a few days!

For now, we've begun our ministry work...teaching through Proverbs in English with 15+ students, also teaching Proverbs with the staff at the ministry center, helping with feeding and tutoring programs, and doing what we can to be encouragers to the staff. We are also living about a maternity clinic where we have offered our services to help in any way we can. We might observe/help deliver a few babies while we're here! YIKES!

Pray for language...we having some trouble and pray for wisdom while we are preparing lessons and learning how to interact with our students.

Dear Friends,

The time has come!!! Tomorrow morning at 8:30am (central), I leave for the Philippines! I'm eager and anxious to see what I'm stepping into, but whatever it is I know God will teach me a great many things and hopefully use me for good. I have many prayer requests to leave you with so I'll list those at the end of this email.

I wanted to let you know a little more of what I'll be doing. In addition to making friends and doing community service type work in the slums, it looks like my ministry partner (Emily Bill) and I will be doing English readings for small groups as well as some 1 on 1 or small group studies of Proverbs. I was trying to study up today on the context and background of Proverbs to get a better feel for teaching it. It looks like I will be learning a lot as I try to teach!

Prayer Requests:

* For safety and stamina as I travel from San Antonio, to Detroit, to Nagoya (Japan), and finally to Manila. It will be over 20 hours of traveling. Pray for a good attitude :)

* For my family. Specifically (1) my sister (Amy) and brother-in-law (Haven) with their not-yet-born baby (Phyra) and (2) my father (Bill) battling with cancer. Pray that God would watch over them and keep them.

* For adaptation. Because I don't know all the details yet, there are many unknowns of being and working in the Philippines. Pray that I'll be flexible and quick to listen and learn.

* For consistency. Pray that I will be faithful in my personal study of God's word and in prayer, that my spiritual life will deepen with this experience and that I will encourage others in that as well.

* For John and Carol Koenke as well as the other SEND staff in Manila and Detroit--that they would be blessed for their welcoming spirits and that God would continue to bless and provide for their ministry.

* For health. That sickness would not hinder our work or friendships, but that we would be full of strength for what God has prepared for us to do.

* For teamwork. Pray that Emily Bill, myself, and whoever we are working with would be amiable and considerate--giving preference to one another and extending patience.

* For fruit. Pray that the seeds of the gospel we plant in our words and actions would take root and produce the fruit of new Christians in our Muslim and non-Muslim circles.

Thank you for your prayers, your love, and your kind notes to me. They mean SO much. Many of you have written words of encouragement and challenge to me as I prepare for this. I am honored to be backed by your faith and honored to carry your name in my representation of the gospel to another part of the world. God be glorified in each of your lives and in mine as we seek to serve Him.

It's been such an enjoyable time to just live with my own family again. I forget how to interact with them when I'm in a college environment all the time! It's been especially wonderful to spend time with my sister and brother-in-law. Amy's posted pictures of our venture to the new section of the riverwalk. Visit her blog here:

For more fun, we went to the botanical gardens for the annual "Shakespeare in the Park" production. It's a free event open to the public and it's been a great tradition for us the last 4 years. This year's production was "As You Like It" and I must say, it was my favorite thus far.

With my time in Texas coming to a close and Amy's baby getting ready to pop, our family really hasn't planned anything these days. We're in a weird stage of waiting. So...when we're sitting in the middle of the day, twiddling our thumbs, we've come up with some fun things to do. The parents re-stained their deck. They keep threatening that they're calling me in 6 years to come back and do it again for them. As much as I'd love to, I think I have a dentist appointment that day (*winkwink*)Another fun thing we did today--Amy, Haven and I went to the Japanese tea gardens and the zoo!!!

Well that's all for now. Please continue to pray for my dear sister, Amy, as she has her baby (HOPEFULLY this weekend). Also, pray for our friend Cathi. She had a nasty fall and is undergoing surgery tonight.

Summer Prayers...

Dear Friends,

Can you believe it? I leave for the Philippines in 13 days!!! I can’t describe my attitude towards this—its both nervousness and excitement combined. A healthy feeling to have, I think. I have so much good news to report!

First, thanks so the help of my great support team, I am fully supported (financially and in prayer partners) for this internship. WOW. In comparison to last summer, it was incredible to see how quickly people responded to my letter and how readily they gave. Maybe they’re just tired of getting my letters GET THIS INTERNSHIP DONE ALREADY! In all seriousness…each person that replied to my letter has had a very significant role in my life and faith. I was writing little notes to each of them and as I did, I remembered memories of them at different points in my life. It was such an encouraging time to reflect and see how God has built a circle of friends around me for times such as these. I am grateful for each person.

Second, many of you are aware that my father was recently diagnosed with cancer. What a time of prayer this has been for me and I have seen so many others surround myself, my siblings, and my dad in their own prayers. His most recent tests showed that the cancer is certainly not as bad as it could be and his doctors are hopeful that chemotherapy should take care of all of it. He begins his treatments today (the 27th) and will be in chemo for the next 18 weeks or so. Do pray for his strength and stamina. More good news is that I got to make a trip to see him the last three days. It was a short trip, but a delightful time to be with him and the family there. It was good for both of us to see each other before I left for the summer and he began this battle.

Finally, my sister (Amy) continues to do well with her pregnancy. The baby, our little Phyra Grace, seems to be happily situated for the time being, though her aunty (ME!) is hoping she’ll make her début before I leave. Amy is due June 1st and is radiant as ever. Continue to pray for her strength and rest as she prepares to deliver.

As of 9:15 this morning, my semester is complete! Praise the Lord...I never thought it'd all get done! Somehow, God gives just enough strength for the tasks He sets before us. Now onto the next thing.

I've been reading in Psalms for my devotions recently. Last night as I was sleepily reading through the chapters, I came across one that was very applicable to me as I go to the Philippines.

Psalm 16: The Hope of the Faithful, and the Messiah's Victory

It's so funny to me how I'll hear teenagers, psychologists, counselors, etc etc all talk about "finding yourself"...discovering who you are. Though there may be a certain amount of truth to that, I think perhaps we (only speaking for Christians at this point) spend too much time trying to get to know ourselves, that we don't spend enough time just getting to know our Lord. Perhaps there is a way we can do both...appreciate the way God has made us.

"So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." -Genesis 1:27

"Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's." -1 Corinthians 6:19-20

How amazing to be made in the image and for the joy of a Holy God.

With that, I decided to share some of the things that make me...
Uniquely me.

* My favorite M&Ms are the brown and green ones.

* One characteristic my father gave me was a love for bookstores--new or used (preferably used...character added to every page)

* My mother encouraged my love of music...piano is my 2nd voice.

* I'm 20 and I still don't like mushrooms.

* I like crab, but not shrimp.

* I enjoy the sophisticated and elegant but also the casual and laid-back.

* My favorite memories are with the Obera cousins at Noni and Papa's house or at Christmas cabins.

* I'm a fake artist...sketching on napkins or in journals, but never taking the time to learn how to do it well :)

* I get excited about making an excel spreadsheet.

* I crave two things (not simultaneously): milk chocolate and orange juice.

* When I meet people, I like to find out how they drink their coffee.

* I'm nearly convinced God intended all people to eat while sitting on the floor.

* The best summer Saturday would be: a picnic on the beach or buying fresh foods at the farmer's market and napping in the sunshine.

* Kite flying and archery are amazing.

* My heroes are my grandmothers, Ruth Bruckart, Beverley Obera and Marjorie Cohoon.

* I was born into a family whose history is covered in God's grace.

Since I've put this link on my missions support letters, I think it's about time I gave a MISSIONS UPDATE (or perhaps just any sort of update). :)

Last summer, I attempted to piece together a trip to fulfill the requirements for my school internship. I tried to go with Every Child Ministries to Ghana to do slave liberation, however, God made it (and continues to make it) abundantly clear to me that it was not His will for that trip to take place.

I'm now a senior at Moody (graduating December 2009) and this is my last summer to do an internship. In truth, I was dreading the process of looking, applying, training, support-raising, and doing an internship again. I felt so embarrassed and upset with the Lord for not doings things MY WAY that I did not begin with an attitude of openness and gratefulness. Both qualities are tremendously important for missions and the Christian life in general.

Let me tell you how God gave constant mercy and grace to me, a sinner with a horridly selfish attitude...

**Without me realizing it, God had used last year's process to train me and show me the responsibilities that needed to be met. I have been more knowledgeable and prepared to step into this experienced because of having tried and failed once already.

**When I had hardly began to look for a new possibility, the doors of ONE agency flew open. The Lord knows how much I love options, but hate decisions. He gave me few options, but only one that obviously fit.

**God is expanding my interests. Though I've always been passionate about ending injustice in terms of slavery and abuse, the last few years of study have intrigued me regarding Muslim culture, religion, and their need for Christ. This opportunity was completely geered toward this aspect in such a way that I can learn by observing and participating in a safe and supervised context.

**One of my greatest fears was that the agency I went with would expect me to do all the inter-cultural work (i.e. visas, plane tickets, contextualizing, understanding the culture and the ministry, etc). SEND International REQUIRES each missionary (short or long term) to go through very detailed training and debriefing for their trips. They desire to provide their members with proper care as their people are experiencing completely different situations that weigh heavily on faith and heart. My time at SEND's training in March was one of the best experiences of my life--studying the Scriptures with other missionaries, receiving help in the media aspects and planning, learning how to support raise and keep donors well-aware of what was going on, and building tremendous friendships.

**I have a very difficult time raising support. I dislike asking others for money. It requires vulnerability and admittance that there is no possible way I can go without the involvement of the church. During training, God impressed on me that I couldn't ask for help because of pride (wanting to do this on my own), and fear (that no one would actually support). After much prayer and convincing by close advisers, I chose to ask for help in my two needs: prayer and finances.

THUS FAR, GOD HAS PROVIDED THROUGH DEAR PEOPLE 5 OF 15 REGULAR PRAYER PARTNERS AND OVER $1,000 OUT OF $4,600!!! WOW. (Keep in mind, letters only went out 2 weeks ago!)

I can't deny His goodness.

Texas...I never thought I'd like you...

When I was in high school, I would talk with a few of my friends about how much they loved Texas and would never leave and how much I disliked it and would be leaving ASAP. Funny how you change your mind so quickly. Reasons for this change of heart...
* Texas has no negative degree weather...
* People in Texas ARE (in general) more friendly...
* Food portions are bigger...
* They know the importance of Dr. Pepper...
* They have REAL Tex-mex...
* The Alamo Cafe...
* You can drive faster...
* If there's traffic on the highway, there are usually backroads...
* You can wear flip-flops everyday except it's one ice-day...

I concede...Texas IS a good state. :)

It's 60 degrees in Chicago today. The sun is out. It's beautiful. So beautiful and warm...I probably could cry out of joy if I let myself. *sigh*

I'm awful at this blogging thing. I go through short spurts of inspiration and long droughts of writer's block. :P

I came to a realization about myself today--one my step-dad will tell me he's noticed for years (and he's right). When I know what to expect and how things are supposed to go, I'm great. But when things are unknown or shaken up, I get flustered and frustrated. The world caves in.

There is something to be said for that cliche phrase, "Roll with the punches..." I need to learn that.

Founder's Week was amazing. Go to to download the sermons. Crawford Loritts did a series on Rest, Courage, and Restoration...by far my favorite.

I love sun chips. They remind me of days living in California...shopping at Zannato's (sp?) family grocery store where mom would never let us get chips or sweet things because we always got cavities. :)

I'm glad life keeps moving along. It's not always what I think I want, but it always ends up being good. A lot changes with perspective and a good attitude. I'm hopeful for the semester. It's the beginning of the end for school. I'm excited for the end. But the process will be challenging and stretching.

I hate leaving my family and my church in Texas. I think I'm addicted to them. Despite our flaws, drama, and even mundane-ness at times, I love living life with these people. I will miss them all. I'm convinced that "real life" outside of college should revolve around our families. God put us in them for a reason...immediate ministry from the day we're born.

Pray for me as I return to Moody tonight. I'm looking at a heavy course load and a lot of hours, but the preparation and study of God's word is so valuable. These are my classes...

My PCM (Practical Christian Ministry) is at the SouthAsian Friendship Center. Not sure what I'll be doing yet, but I get to interact weekly with Muslim and Hindu people. I'm hopeful for some "hands on" ministry training for when I'm doing my internship in the Philippines this summer. (more to come on that)

I go through moments of inspiration. Maybe that's what I should title this blog instead. :) I think it necessary to write about topics that are semi-worthwhile. BUT...when the great discussions of all time do not pop into my head, what other ideas shall I consider? I could...

* Tell you what I had for breakfast.
* Write out my grocery list.
* Elaborate on my very unpractical new year's resolutions.
* Gawk at my nieces and nephews (more than I already do).
* Tell you about my bad habits, like not writing my thank-you notes within a week of Christmas.
* Quote famous people.
* Give you a list of favorites.
* Or write out a fantastic story.

See, I prefer the random and spontaneous over the expected.

On another note, I think I have finally decided on a trade, of sorts. I have often toyed with the idea of pursuing nursing, never being extremely all for it, but it has begun to grow on me as of late. My friend, CJ, will claim I'm copying her, which is fine. My mother always said, "Copying is the highest form of flattery." Somehow I stilled never liked being copied...oh well. So yes, the plan as of now is to finish at Moody December 09, take some training the semester prior, then hopefully apply for nursing school through a hospital program. In certain cases, a hospital will pay for your training and you are then committed to work for them for a number of years after you finish, much like the military. We shall see :)

The excellent part about Nursing is it's a guaranteed job anywhere in the world. My interests in international work can be much easily to facilitate with certification in a field like that. So...please pray for direction while I look into schools and programs and don't hesitate to suggest anything you think of.

Lastly, a music recommendation for anyone that needs to update their cds or itunes....look for the Friday Night Lights soundtrack. It's mostly wordless and very relaxing. BEAUTIFUL music. (Compliments to my brother and sister-in-law who bought that for my Christmas gift).

Every Christmas (for the past 2-3 years, ha) my roommate and two of our best friends (basically roommates) celebrate Christmas together. We hang stockings, which are gradually filled, set up our 2.5 foot Charlie Brown Tree, make hot chocolate and brownies and enjoy each others' company.

Faithfulness

This post is a mix 'n match of stories from this week...

Post office faith...
Yesterday was my last opportunity to get Christmas packages mailed out to my siblings! Oh what a day... After my 8am final, I grabbed my 4 big packages and my wallet from my room and scuttled to the campus post office. When I got to CPO, I opened my wallet as they weighed the packages, only to find $27 in cash and some change. Now, the cost of mailing A package at Christmas time is about $15 from Chicago. You do the math...4 packages...$27...not enough (mind you, it's a cash only post office). I stood at the counter, wishing/hoping/praying that somehow I wouldn't have to take some of the packages home, trudge out in the snow, find an ATM, withdraw money, and go back to CPO before work at 11am. God likes to laugh with me sometimes. They rang up the bill...$27.21. :D Dingdingding! Packages sent!

Conversations...
A few nights ago, Jesse and I were meeting two of our homeless friends to celebrate Christmas with them. They weren't able to show up, so Jesse and I had dinner together. As we were getting ready to leave, a woman sitting at the table in front of us gets our attention and smiles so calmly :) She asked if we had a few minutes to sit and talk with her, so we did. It was providential that our friends did not show up--we spent the next hour or so talking with this lady, Ava was her name. Her Bible had been open to Genesis. It was one of those texts that had be scribbled over with years of wear, highlighting, special dates, prayers, and sermon notes in the margins. Back and forth, we shared Scriptures of God's faithfulness to the people in the Bible as well as His goodness to us. She is walking through a "dark valley" as the Christianese would term it, but her hope is so strong. Ava is homeless by way of identity theft. It's a very hard situation for her ethically--she's not sure if she should sue those that did this or if God would have her forgive and make due. Please pray for her wisdom and that she would not seek her own revenge.

Real life, real world...
I work for Moody's Customer Service Center and answer phones. These are some true story examples.

Speaking slowly...."Hello...I had called once before to ask for prayer...I need it again. My name's Bernice...I just became a Christian...I have no Christian friends. The man I'm living with is not a good person...a very controlling man. Please pray for me...I have no where else to go." This was from one of my calls yesterday at work. Please pray for her. She was in tears over the phone by the end of our conversation.

A Pakistani gentleman named Habeeb called today. He told me he is a Muslim but he listens to WMBI all the time when he can. "I wish we (Muslims) had people like Moody Bible people in our religion...we need them!" There was a program on the radio a few days ago that was talking about the organization Jihad Watch and some books about Islam from a Christian perspective. He was so excited and wanting to learn what the Bible would have to say about faith. Truth is so appealing, yet so hard for the lost to find. Pray that God would reveal the truth to Habeeb and bring him to salvation.

I am such a romantic. Have you ever watched all those old black and white Christmas movies where the main character contently crunches through the snow, passing by window displays of toy trains and porcelain dolls...or how about those fabulous (over-dramatic) hallmark movies where tragedy takes hold of a couple's life, they grow apart the days before Christmas, then after decorating their trees alone and realizing their need for each other, they get back together in time for Christmas eve :) *sigh*

Every time I take a walk in the city, I think, "Why can't real life have a soundtrack?" The chorus of violins never seems to take my cues: "Okay, this is a sad moment! Play something depressing!" A taxi honked once, though! ;)

Where are you this Christmas? I've tried to get in my usual reflective mode to evaluate where I've been these last few months--have I learned and if so, what? How have I impacted people? Where do I go from here? I think these questions are good and serve their purpose. Be encouraged to really learn the art of reflection. How can you move forward if you don't know where you've been? God gifts us this gift of memory and a processing mechanism to work through it. Take advantage of such.

As you think through, be mindful and watchful of people near to you--not necessarily just those you know. I read an incredible book last night titled, "Days of Glory, Seasons of Night." The daughter of a famed missionary described her families struggles through life and rejection. Her older sister was an outward example of everything a Christian young woman should be, yet her journals and letters reveal an open wound of a life. She committed suicide at the age of 28, not because she doubted God's love for her, but because her anxieties were so overwhelming that she could not hold her head above them. No one knew of her struggles until after her first failed attempt to take her life. We all have heard that suicide rates rise during the Christmas season, much due to the fact that it's hard for people to be alone during these special times. OPEN YOUR HOME TO THOSE THAT ARE ALONE. No one should dread Christmas or "celebrate" it alone.

Be glad for this season. I know it's hard for non-snowed folks to understand the concept of winter ;) but the idea of a season for things to die off and wash out seems sad. Spring comes soon, though, and new life grows. This is the whole idea: regeneration. God gives us some wonderful visible examples for what He does in our lives.

This morning, Mike Kellogg, one of the famous radio voices of WMBI, is coming to chapel. Every year, one day at the end of school, Mr. Kellogg sits in his big leather chair, the auditorium lights dim, and he reads us Christmas stories :) A room full of young and old adults reverts back to childhood as we listen to stories of snowflakes and Christmas cookies :) Create Christmas traditions in your families...they provide wonderful memories for your kids when they are grown.

It's finally turned winter in the city. I'm learning to appreciate the cold, as it makes me that much more grateful for things of warmth: a home, blankets, socks, a hot drink, friends to snuggle with. When I was little, my mom wanted so badly for me to be a "snuggler." She'd make me crawl up on her bed with her for nap-time so she could hug me or make me scratch her arms. I wanted to be an independent brat then so I rarely obliged her and when I did it was out of "have to" circumstances. "SNUGGLE OR YOU CAN'T GO PLAY!" ;) I've always had a great mom...but she certainly has gotten cooler over the years.

Do you ever smell something that brings back memories from years ago? Camp fires, musty books, cedar and pine trees...these remind me of my dad. Our family didn't have a lot of money when I was growing up so instead of flying, we road-tripped for most of our family vacations. We drove to Redlands, California to see my grandparents several times a year. I remember, the final part of the drive was climbing through a forest on one of the mountains. Pine cones would sometimes hit the top of the car and squires would dodge across the road. It always smelled of Christmas with the pine and cedar decorating the slopes. If it was near winter, there would be patches of snow on the tops of trees or in the rock crevices. My dad would get this smile across his face as he rolled down the windows and put his head into the wind. This was home for him.

College students are an interesting bunch. Young adults all about to begin their "real lives," some single, some starting families. Each one returns to their past for a glance at what has gone before them. Their parents play such a vital role, be that bad or good. Sadly, a great majority look back at broken marriages and families...failed relationships and hurting family members. It's so easy to see the hurt and not beyond.

I have come to grips with the fact that there will be hurt and brokenness in my family's past that will just remain, like a picture framed in someone's house...it just hangs there as something you may see everyday that acts as a reminder for you. But as I look at it and wonder why it's still around, I've realized that healing doesn't come until we can look at those people and situations and see the redeemable elements of them. It's easy for me to pick out flaws in my family, but how little I have sat to think of the good they have taught me...the qualities they have passed on to me.

As we interact with people, I think it's important that we don't judge them for where or what family they've come from, but we should be encouraging them to seek the redeemable things from their past. What is the good of the past if we do not learn from it?

I love the city. There are times when it is difficult to remember that. It's easy to complain about the smell...sirens...people...crime...cold...business...etc. But I forget all too often its beauty:

Fall trees,
Church steeples,
Christmas lights,
Cathedral bells,
Crazy sights,
The cool breeze,
Tall buildings,
Snow flurries,
Starbucks,
Kind friends,
Thrift stores,
Rivers,
Parks,
Beaches,
Musicals and plays,
Bookstores galore,
Art galleries,
Ethnic foods,
and so much more.

I don't ever regret moving to the city for college. What a good choice that was. I admire those that plant roots in this constantly-growing and moving place. What a hard place to minister to people. There's a scary oppression that covers this city, but it does not quench God's work throughout. How precious are the prayers of His children to Him.

This morning in my Missionary Relationships class, the topic was about priorities. How many people get so frustrated with themselves or others because they think their priorities are out of whack?! I raise my hand high to this and say that I am certainly one. I get frustrated, mostly with others, if I think their prioritizing things above other more pertinent or important areas of life. Here's how most people (at least in the ministry world) think life SHOULD be prioritized:

1) God
2) Wife/Husband
3) Children/Family
4) Ministry
5) Community/Church

Things cannot ALWAYS be the way we like them. We cannot ALWAYS have a devotional time from 8-9am. We cannot ALWAYS have family night on Thursdays. We cannot ALWAYS go to church on Sunday mornings. The only ALWAYS is that CHRIST LOVES ALWAYS.

FLEXIBILITY has to happen in ANY relationship. There will be times that we will need to be flexible and need to ALLOW for our spouse/partner/friend/etc to FLEX where they need to, even if it takes away from us. HOWEVER, DO NOT ABUSE THAT FLEXIBILITY WITH ONE ANOTHER. It will turn to bitterness, hurt, and frustration.

Instead of looking at priorities as a list, try viewing it this way:

Ministry-------Community/Church

Moody is famous for it's intermural sports. It's pretty much the only fun outlet most of the Moody men have :) Well it's football season here at MBI and today was the opening day. My boyfriend plays on his floor's A-team (Dryer 2!)

Today was great. First game was at noon...at which time D2 whipped the opposition 30-0. The second game was at 3, also a win at 12-6, but a few more twists...

Jesse was going for the ball just as our friend, James, was also. Pictures speak for themselves. Jesse got knocked out for about 10 seconds and couldn't remember the 10 minutes following. We had a fun 4 hour ER visit tonight :D He was discharged with head trauma and tylenol. Gotta love hospitals :)

What an adventure. We followed that visit with a visit to Portillos for some shakes and french fries :D good stuff.

SO many thoughts rushing through my brain...mmmmmmmm...so good :) Praise God for the power to think!

I'm reading through Ezekiel at the moment and today was chapter 8. Ezekiel is given this vision...he goes to the temple in Jerusalem and is commanded to dig into a wall. He does so and finds a door...a door to the room of the people's idols. The walls give witness of the abominations of the supposedly pious people...burning incense to other gods, worshiping the sun, women weeping for Tammuz (Babylonian god), etc... Then comes this key convicting verse...

"Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the room of his idols? For they say, 'Yahweh does not see us, Yahweh has forsaken the land." (vs. 12)

How many of us have committed sin, maybe thinking in our minds, "I know God sees all, but maybe He can't see this..." Do you notice how sin is so much easier when brought about in darkness...the human eyes may not see as well, but God's eyes do not require light to weep at the sin He sees us committing.

How many sins have we hidden in our hearts, thinking God cannot see them there?! "Search my heart, O God...", reveal the sin in it, and teach me how to repent.

It's been a huge privilege to be a student under his leadership. I had heard such great things from my aunt and uncle, past members of his previous church, that I had high expectations for how he would lead. My expectations were surpassed, but not by his great oratory or diplomatic manner, though he has both...I was more impressed with the quiet way he spoke. I admire Dr. Easley because he never communicates any scripture to the students that has not first made an impact on his own life.

This morning was the final president's chapel that Dr. Easley would be preaching as Moody's president. His charge to the audience was this:

SEEK THE LORD ALL YOUR LIFE.

"What voices are you listening to?" he asked. "Radiate the wisdom of Christ. Be wise as you age."
May God prepare him for whatever ministry he is brought to next.

Perhaps we'll discuss a different type of hero.

Who are 5 people you would consider to be your heroes in this life? (People you have known in your lifetime.) I can name several of my own...

What happens when you realize your hero is also human...has flaws...defects...sins of their own? Do you brace yourself under that pedestal to keep it from toppling over?

I've been processing this concept for the past few months and come to a few conclusions. There have been several people in my acquaintance that I've truly looked up to...worshiped, in a loose use of the term. These people have a great deal of wisdom; they approach life with a solid mind and open heart. But as with anything in the human life, we must be wary of putting to much admiration and emphasis into another person. We're all humans...depraved humans at that.

The cliche, but none-the-less true, fact is that Christ is the true hero. Our hearts long to be in awe and astonishment of someone. Humans will disappoint and fail. Christ endures forever...Christ never fails. "The soul was made to stand in awe of a Person--the only person worthy of awe. All heroes are shadows of Christ. We love to admire their excellence. How much more will we be satisfied by the one Person who conceived all excellence and embodies all skill, all talent, all strength and brilliance and savvy and goodness" (John Piper--Don't Waste Your Life).

I believe it's okay to look up to people...to appreciate the Christ-like qualities in them...but not to the extent that we cannot recognize their humanity and depravity as well.

Last night I learned that there is such a thing as "dirty chai." Chai tea+a shot of expresso. I've not tried it yet, but it must be something amazing.

I got my curfew exemption sticker today :) Much to my parent's dismay, I can stay out all night and party if I decided to turn my life that way. But thank goodness for everyone's sake, I like to be in bed before 11. :)

My favorite author is CS Lewis (like a billion other people's favorite). I found a quote of his in the preface of a textbook...

"There is a kind of happiness and wonder that makes you serious."

Autumn winds blow the summer gates closed.

Summer has officially come to a close. All things to their proper end, I suppose. Why are transitions so unsettling at times?

As I reflect on the summer, I've really questioned my stewardship of the time. After my trip to Africa fell through, at first I was truly settled with that reality, trusting that God had other plans. But when those other plans didn't seem to meet MY standard of importance, I was very disappointed. Instead of freeing slaves, mending physical wounds, or working in refugee camps, God prepared my hands for different work:
* Going through boxes in my parent's attic...
* Scrubbing ceiling fans and floors...
* Making posters for Psalty musicals...
* Writing letters to distant friends...
* Playing in water fountains with nephews...
* Journaling thoughts of the year in order to see God's faithfulness over time.

I learned many lessons--most of them small and seemingly insignificant, but lessons must begin simply before moving on to the complex.

As I step into another semester at Moody, I do not have the giddy feelings in my stomach of excitement. The smell of freshly sharpened pencils and new books no longer intoxicates me. Rather, I'm of a mindset of joy--I am contented in this place God has rested me. I am learning to approach the Scriptures with more reverence. I am learning to worship God for the mundane as well as the brilliant times of life. I am eager and anxious for the Spirit's conviction through classes and conferences.

I appreciate that God always has purpose. I am so blinded to His purposes sometimes, but I am grateful that He doesn't count on us seeing them to have them exist.

"Hey mom! Look what the cat dragged in!" Oh wait...

So Puddy (my adorable, yet very fat and lazy cat) and I were curled up in bed...peacefully resting. *ticktick* We wake up...Puddy raises her droopy-eyed face to look at the window. Thinking it's a bug hitting the window, she stretches and jumps on the sill. By this time, I've revisited my comfortable sleep state.

*BAM*

Suddenly, every hair on that cat's body was standing straight up. Dug into my window screen was a set of sharp teeth!
Three coons had climbed a tree and got themselves stuck on my roof. As I banged on the window to scare the creatures away, they tried to dig a hole into my room. Deer spray and a flood light later, Puddy and I went back to bed.
Next time you think "oh how cute and cuddly" about these furry beasts, just ask one of them to smile at you...

I'm a thinker. This is a blessing and a curse. I think too long on things that don't mean 2 cents and I don't think before I act or say something stupid. Unfortunate. However, in the hours and hours of miscellaneous thought-flow, God sticks in a very directed chain of thought, and boy are those times good.

Throughout the summer, I have seen patterns in my life that reflect very similarly to some in my parents and grandparents. As I looked into it more, I realized that I had never studied or questioned the concept of generational sin. Now, be advised that these are merely the preliminary findings of an ignorant teenager. However, they have opened up some great doors of understanding for me.

First of all, there is something to be said for the way one is influenced by parents and previous generations. The all too common example people use is that of an alcoholic: a child of an alcoholic parent is statistically more likely to become an alcoholic. I think the same can be said for any prevalent sin--children watch their parents' example of sin, there is a chance they might follow such example and be guilty of the same sin.

HOWEVER...(brilliant quote I found)..."Although significantly influenced by them, believers are not slaves to their environment, circumstances, nerve endings, psyche, chemical soup, or parents."

The concept of "generational sin" seems to stem from the passage of Scripture: Exodus 34:6-7. "⁶Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; ⁷who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations."

Listen to what Wayne Grudem says about this passage: "This statement shows the horrible nature of sin in the way it has effects far beyond the individual sinner, also harming those around the sinner and harming future generations as well. We see this in tragic ways in ordinary life...the children of abusive parents often become abusive parents. Christians who are forgiven by Christ should not think of these phrases as applying to them, however, for they are in the other category of people mentioned just before this section on 'the guilty': they are among the 'thousands' to whom God continually shows 'steadfast love,' and in continually 'forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin' (vs. 7). When someone comes to Christ the chain of sin is broken (1 Peter 1:18-19)."

Unfortunately, it seems as though many people have taken the scriptures on this subject and changed them from a message of hope to one of excuse. We cannot say, "well, because of this generational sin in my family, it's not my fault that I struggle with it." WRONG-O. May I again say, if we are believers in Christ, then it is HE who has won the victory over sin and REDEEMED us from the "curse of the law" (Galatians 3:10-14).

Here is the cool part...when we believe in Christ, we are no longer heirs of SIN...but heirs of GOD. We have an inheritance in Christ.

Last summer, within a period of two weeks, I rear-ended two people. Today was my lucky day! Poor Elmer (my parent's white toyota camery) felt like it was time to renew that lovely experience and was rear-ended today :) CJ, this time it WASN'T my fault ;)

The past few summers, my sisters and I have realized the importance of learning from and encouraging one another. I have been so fortunate to have a sister live near in San Antonio. We had a sister-date last night. Our original intent was to have Moroccan food, to be eaten on the floor tables, but alas...San Antonio has no such places (at least that we could find). Instead, we settled for a different kind of ethnic experience. We went to Madras Pavilion which, I must tell you, was fabulous. We ordered a few dishes and were given a wonderful tutorial by our waiter as to how the yogurt and lemon curries assist to calm the pallet after intense spices :) It was wonderful. Our favorite dish was the Chicken Korma...a white meat chicken, cooked in sweet coconut milk and light curry and cilantro.
Oh yum... :)
I encourage you to visit similar restaurants and experiment. VERY rewarding :) Bring a sister or a friend. That makes it 200 times better. :)

THAT'S RIGHT! T-SHIRTS! As I've been going through attic boxes this summer, I came across one that was full of clothes. As I pulled them out, low and behold, there are all my senior year t-shirts (mind you...JUST senior year). I think the final total for the ones I kept was 15... that's ridiculous. Let me show you a few...

Ah the days of high school...they don't provide your clothes for you in college :(
